Study title: Deep Enhancing Dental Education Through Artificial Intelligence: Improving Student Detection of Tonsilloliths in Panoramic Radiographs
IRB Project Number: 2045067
The purpose of this study is to analyze the usefulness of artificial intelligence in detecting tonsilliths (calcified material in the tonsils) in dental radiographs among dental students and to assess their perception of AI as a learning resource. You are being asked to take part in this research because you are a third year dental student who has taken the radiology course. This study is for research purposes only. Your alternative to participating in this study is not to participate.
If you decide to participate in this study, you will be asked to analyze three panoramic radiographs and identify/mark tonsilliths with and without the help of artificial intelligence followed by a short survey.
We expect that your participation in this study will take 10–15 minutes.
This study is minimal risk research, which means that the risks to you by participating in this study are no greater than the risks you ordinarily encounter in your daily life or during the performance of routine physical or psychological examinations or tests. Risks of participating in this study include potential minor risk of data breach of personal identifying information. To reduce these risks, data will be stored in Creighton’s secure Blue network with access to the project specific folder limited to team members approved by the IRB. As with participation in any research study, there may be risks to your confidentiality and privacy because of your participation in this study. The following measures are in place to help guard against these risks: data will be stored in Creighton’s secure Blue network with access to the project specific folder limited to team members approved by the IRB.
There may or may not be direct benefit to you as a result of your participation in this study. This study may help researchers learn more about the benefits of artificial intelligence in dental curriculum.
You will receive a Starbucks gift card of $10 for your participation in this study. Payments will occur through Creighton Center for Faculty Excellence (CFE). You will receive an email from CFE issuing the gift card.
Although we are asking for your name and email address, it is unlikely that someone could identify you because the information will be shared only with CFE for the purpose of issuing gift cards. The information collected as part of the research, even if identifiers are removed, will not be used or distributed for future research studies.
Taking part in this research study is voluntary. If you decide not to participate in this research or you decide to stop participating before the end of the study, there will be no penalty to you, and you will not lose any benefits to which you are otherwise entitled.
If you are a Creighton University (CU) student or faculty/staff member, your decision about whether to participate in this study will not affect your grades, academic status, or job status at CU. You will not be offered or receive any special consideration if you take part in this research study.
If you have questions or concerns about this study, please contact Dr. Niranzena Panneer Selvam at NiranzenaPanneerSelvam@creighton.edu or StevenFernandes@creighton.edu.
